Are we getting ripped off by the funeral industry?
Mary-Jane, a mother of two whose husband had passed away, was hit with a funeral bill of $11,500. A bill that she could not afford.
Mary-Jane is not the only one who has ended up in this situation. According to recent statistics, Australians pay an average of $10,000 for burial service and $6,000 for a cremation service.
A report by market researcher IBIS World claims the nation’s funeral and cremation industry raked in excess of $120 million profit in the year 2017-2018. During that time, 785 Victorians had to be buried with assistance from the government, as the families could not afford the funeral costs.
A Victorian funeral director states that a premium full-service funeral he arranged
back in 1989 cost just $990, whereas the same funeral today in 2019 would cost over $14,000.
The IBIS World report highlights that out of the total of the funeral services and 50 percent for the coffin or casket.
Australian Funeral DIrectors Association president Bernadine Brierty recommends Australians to negotiate with funeral directors if they want to save on funeral costs.
It is important to be educated on what you have control of when preparing for a funeral, and you will be able to save thousands.
A typical funeral would consist of viewing service, flowers, coffin or casket, hearse and music. Many of these items can be sourced elsewhere, and that is where the savings can be found.
The flowers used in a funeral service for example, cost $450 on average, but can also be bought for roughly $150 from the florist.
Viewing services can even be arranged at a local church or chapel for free.
Coffins and caskets, when purchased from a funeral home, can cost anywhere from $1,500 for a basic coffin to $8,000 for a wooden casket. Customers can save up to 50% or more on their coffin costs if they were to purchase it from independent retailers such a Coffin World, who sells coffins and caskets direct to the public.
A flat lid coffin costing $1,495 or more in funeral homes can be bought for $895 at Coffin World.
Similar, a basic casket starting from $4,000 in funeral homes could be purchased from $2,000 from Coffin World.
There are Australians that have told us they “have saved thousands” after choosing to buy a coffin or casket from Coffin World, as opposed to purchasing from a funeral homes.
Luckily for us, Coffin World has opened up their business in Victoria and has been helping Australians save money since 2012. They ship their products all over Australia, and for Victorian residents can provide same day or next day delivery.
